How the scores are worked out
Sentences, words and syllables are counted in your browser. Syllables come from the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary where it holds the word and from a vowel-group rule otherwise. The six formulas are the published ones; the consensus grade is the median of the five grade formulas.
Each word is looked up, with simple endings removed (-s, -ed, -ing, -er, -ly and common irregular forms), in the CEFR-J Wordlist (A1-B2) and the Octanove Vocabulary Profile (C1-C2). The vocabulary level is the lowest level that covers 95% of the listed words, raised one or two steps when more than 4% or 10% of the words are on neither list. The sentence band compares the average sentence length with a rule of thumb (A1 8, A2 12, B1 16, B2 21, C1 26 words). The estimated CEFR level is the higher of the two. It is a guide, not a test result.
